My Terengganu

Terengganu is located at the east coast of Peninsular Malaysia. To the north there lies the Kelantan state, then neigbouring with Pahang at the south.

History

History of Terengganu began long before the establishment of Melaka sultanate. The archaeological evidences found in Bewah Cave in Kenyir Lake proven that this state has already been resided since 4,000 B.C. However, the Sultanate of Terengganu began only in 1724 with Sultan Zainal Abidin as the first sultan for this state.
During the early sultanate period, although Siam claimed that Terengganu was part of its dominion resulted from the Bunga Emas and Bunga Perak sent by the latter in every 3 years, it was said that the gift was actually a present of courtesy and token of friendship but not tributes as to prevent the interference of British in the state’s administration. Siam handed over Terengganu to British in 1909 after signing the Bangkok Agreement but this was rejected by Terengganu. Another agreement was then signed between Terengganu and British in 1910 and thereafter Terengganu officially recognized the appointment of a British Representative with the condition the British agent was not empowered to interfere in the administration of the state. The British who was not satisfy with their status continued to look for ways to get involve in the internal affairs of the state. In 1919, their attempt finally succeeded. Another agreement was signed between British and Sultan Muhammad. Terengganu officially accepted a British advisor, seek and follow his counsels in all administrative matters except religion issues.
Nevertheless, the involvement of British had brought to resistance from the people. The patriotic awareness had spread among the state and led to the establishment of Association of Young Malays (Kesatuan Melayu Muda, KMM) in 1937. A series of campaigns was held by KMM during 1940-1941. In 1942 when the Japanese took the control of Peninsular Malaysia, KMM was dissolved and Terengganu was under the administration of Japanese Army until 1943 when the governance authority was transferred to the Thai Army. Thai administration remained in Terengganu until Japan conceded defeat to the alliance in August 1945, then it was again back to the hand of British until the Federation of Malaya achieved her independence on 31 August 1957.

Today

Terengganu today covers 12,995 square kilometers and comprises of seven districts: Setiu, Kemaman, Dungun, Marang, Hulu Terengganu and Kuala Terengganu. There is approximately 1 million of population in this state which 90% are Malays and the reminder share among the Chinese and Indians and a very small percentage goes to aborigines.

Economy

The discovery of offshore oil in gas in 1974 has granted Terengganu a significant change to its economic, technology and social structure. At current production, the oil and gas reserves are estimated to last for another 13 years and 41 years respectively. Terengganu has enjoyed considerable development over the past 30 years with its rapid industrialization and growing economic activity after the discovery of these reserves. Before this, farming and fishing were the main economic activities for the state. Even so, 45% of its land is still covered by lush pristine forests and rivers also home for some very old Malaysia traditional culture whose practices and customs have been handed down the generations. The 225 km of coastline is not only making Terengganu the state with the longest coastline in Peninsular Malaysia but also contributing to the state GNP. As a holiday destination, Terengganu is a neverending journey of discovery with its rich and exotic culture, breathtaking wonders of nature and endless potential for adventure.

Culture and Religion

Due to its history background and geographical location, Terengganu receives cultural influences from the neighbour in the north: Kelantan and Thailand. Though it is conservative Muslim state, the general public is still enjoying the freedom of worship. However, beer or alcohol is not widely available in certain places especially Malay own shops. Always remember that while n Rome, do as the Romans do.

Debating the true cost of wind power electricity
In a report published on 10March, the UK-based Royal Academy of Engineering (RAE) reveals that electricity from offshore wind farms, currently the most viable renewable source, will cost at least twice as much as that from conventional sources.
The independent study, commissioned from international energy consultants PBPower, puts all energy sources on a level playing field by comparing the costs of generating electricity from new plants using a range of different technologies and energy sources. The cheapest electricity will come from gas turbines and nuclear stations, costing just 2.3p/kWh, compared with 3.7p/kWh for onshore wind and 5.5p/kWh for offshore wind farms.

Here, we learned about a “Centrifugal Pump”.
A centrifugal pump is one of the simplest pieces of equipment in any process plant. Its purpose is to convert energy of a prime mover (a electric motor or turbine) first into velocity or kinetic energy and then into pressure energy of a fluid that is being pumped. The energy changes occur by virtue of two main parts of the pump, the impeller and the volute or diffuser. The impeller is the rotating part that converts driver energy into the kinetic energy. The volute or diffuser is the stationary part that converts the kinetic energy into pressure energy.
Note: All of the forms of energy involved in a liquid flow system are expressed in terms of feet of liquid i.e. head.

The process liquid enters the suction nozzle and then into eye (center) of a revolving device known as an impeller. When the impeller rotates, it spins the liquid sitting in the cavities between the vanes outward and provides centrifugal acceleration. As liquid leaves the eye of the impeller a low-pressure area is created causing more liquid to flow toward the inlet. Because the impeller blades are curved, the fluid is pushed in a tangential and radial direction by the centrifugal force. This force acting inside the pump is the same one that keeps water inside a bucket that is rotating at the end of a string.

Saudi Arabia signs for refinery

Saudi Aramco and Total have signed a comprehensive memorandum of understanding (MOU) related to the planned development of a 400000 barrel per day world-class, full-conversion refinery in Jubail, Saudi Arabia.
The proposed refinery will be designed to process Arabian heavy crude and will produce high-quality refined products that meet current and future product specifications. The project is currently scheduled to start up in 2011.
“This proposed project represents an excellent opportunity to build on the Kingdom’s strategy of addressing global energy demand while attracting foreign investment to expand its economy,” said Abdallah S Jum’ah, Saudi Aramco’s president and chief executive officer. “I am proud that Saudi Aramco can support the Kingdom in this process, and I am gratified that our friends and colleagues from Total will be our partners in this world-class project,” he added.
“Total is proud to have been chosen by Saudi Aramco to build an efficient and full conversion refinery that will provide the country with an increased capacity to meet different markets needs in refined petroleum products,” said Thierry Desmarest, Total chairman and chief executive officer. “This agreement reinforces our presence in Saudi Arabia and through this long term project strengthens our close cooperation with Saudi Aramco,” he added.
The MOU sets out the agreement between Saudi Aramco and Total regarding the key parameters of the project, the project configuration, and a broad range of the major technical, commercial, legal, and financial terms.
To proceed as quickly as possible with the project, the parties have agreed to undertake without further delay a comprehensive joint front-end engineering and design (FEED) study. The definitive documents to implement the project will be negotiated in parallel with the joint FEED study.
In terms of the project’s commercial structure, Saudi Aramco and Total have agreed to form a joint venture company, with each holding an ownership interest of 35 per cent. Subject to required regulatory approvals, the parties are planning to offer up to 30percent interest in the project to the Saudi public.
Saudi Aramco will supply the project with 400000 barrels per day of Arabian heavy crude oil. Saudi Aramco and Total will share the marketing of the refinery production.
Speaking at the MOU signing, Jum’ah explained the importance of this latest project: “Our industry is in the midst of a tremendous period of change, and I would argue, at an historic crossroads – or as the old proverb says, we are living in interesting times. We are producing more energy than at any time in history, are operating more efficiently than ever before, and continue to have a tremendous impact on societies and economies around the globe. But what the petroleum industry has gained in efficiency we have lost in flexibility, in part due to chronic global underinvestment in facilities and infrastructure.”
He then went on to describe the importance of downstream investments to the country’s economy: “Perhaps nowhere along the value chain do we see capacities as tight as they are in the refining sector. Crude oil is of little good to the average end-user until it is refined into useful products, and at the moment, our industry’s ability to do that is being stretched. That is why downstream investments – like the Jubail export refinery – are so critical at this point in time, and why forward-looking companies like Total and Saudi Aramco are working so diligently to meet the refining challenge. This facility in particular, with its ability to process large quantities of heavy crude, not only eases tight refining capacities but also addresses the mismatch between available crude supplies and refinery configurations that is complicating today’s market situation.”
Mega projects
More than E79billion will be spent on constructing mega projects over the next five years in Saudi Arabia and business, academic and government leaders met in al-Khobar recently to discuss ways to develop the Kingdom’s work force so that more of that money will stay in the local economy.
The two-day Mega Projects and Learning Dialogue was organised by the Gulf Society for Organisational Learning (Gulf SoL) and sponsored by Saudi Aramco and Saudi Basic Industries Corporation (SABIC). The discussions focused on using the current building boom as an opportunity to lift skill levels in the construction and engineering sectors of the Saudi economy.
“I have a vision for the future, a vision full of possibilities,” said Saudi Aramco’s senior vice president of engineering and operations services Salim S Al-Aydh, “a future where Saudi Arabia is a centre for engineering excellence, a future where Saudi-based companies are major players in mega projects across the Gulf region and beyond. This will require that we do business differently.
“In the last oil boom,” he said, “we invested heavily in construction of new plant facilities. We left behind a legacy of steel and concrete. This time, as we build up new plants, we will invest not only in our physical capacity for oil and gas production, but also in the capacity of our people to plan and execute major projects. Alongside the steel and concrete of our new facilities, we want to leave behind a core competency in engineering, procurement and construction for Saudi Arabia.”
Sabic vice president of human resources, Mohammed Al-Bat’hi, gave the gathering a sobering look at the challenges of ‘Saudisation’. Kingdom employment statistics, he said, show that of a total private-sector labour force of 6.5 million, Saudis represent just 12percent. Although that number is rising, without a concerted effort, money from the massive construction boom is more likely to travel overseas as expatriate worker salaries rather than fuelling growth and prosperity in the Kingdom.
Noting that the Kingdom graduates about 100000 students from colleges and universities across the land and overseas, Al-Bat’hi said that only about
20 000 students graduate from technical and vocational institutes.
More than 20000 engineers and 300000 technical and trade positions will be required by 2010, he said. Graduating engineers account for less than 10percent of the annual university crop.
“We can turn challenges into opportunities by investing in education geared to market requirements,” Al-Bat’hi said. "We need higher quality outcomes in technical and science fields.”
He said education needed to give students good analytical capabilities and that the highest standards should be maintained in craft and semi-skilled training programmes, emphasising the need for fostering discipline and a strong work ethic in the younger generation.
Meanwhile, Mohammed Binladin, a vice president of the Saudi Binladin Group, and Hamed Amin, a vice president of Consolidate Contractors Corporation, both discussed massive training efforts at their companies.
Amin told participants of his company’s support of a Riyadh training centre where students learn carpentry, scaffolding, pipefitting, steel fixing, plumbing and welding – all skills vitally needed in the construction sector.
The Saudi Binladin Group employs more than 50000 workers in the Kingdom. Binladin said the company is working on the creation of the National Institute for Construction Technology, an ambitious effort that could be turning out more than 2200 skilled trade workers annually in the near future.
“We need to empower human capital and value it more than assets,” Binladin said. “It’s the most important asset a nation can have.”

Liquid Petroleum Gas, is often confused with LNG and vice versa.
They are not the same and the differences are significant. LPG is composed primarily of propane, C3 (upwards to 95%) and smaller quantities of butane. LPG can be stored as a liquid in tanks by applying pressure alone. LPG is the "bottled gas" often found under BBQ grills or in the kitchen . LPG has been used as fuel in light duty vehicles for many years. Some country have petrol stations installed with LPG pumps.

Liquefied Natural Gas

When natural gas is cooled to a temperature of approximately -260°F at atmospheric pressure it condenses to a liquid called liquefied natural gas (LNG). One volume of this liquid takes up about 1/600th the volume of natural gas at a stove burner tip. LNG weighs less than one-half that of water, actually about 45% as much. LNG is odorless, colorless, non-corrosive, and non-toxic. When vaporized it burns only in concentrations of 5% to 15% when mixed with air. Neither LNG, nor its vapor, can explode in an unconfined environment.

Natural Gas (NG) is composed primarily of methane CH4 (typically, at least 90%), but may also contain ethane, propane and heavier hydrocarbons. Small quantities of nitrogen, oxygen, carbon dioxide, sulfur compounds, and water may also be found in natural gas. The liquefaction process removes the oxygen, carbon dioxide, sulfur compounds, and water. The process can also be designed to purify the LNG to almost 100% methane.

LNG tanks are always of double-wall construction with extremely efficient insulation between the walls. Large tanks are low aspect ratio (height to width) and cylindrical in design with a domed roof. Storage pressures in these tanks are very low, less than 5 psig. Smaller quantities, 70,000 gallons and less, are stored in horizontal or vertical, vacuum-jacketed, pressure vessels. These tanks may be at pressures any where from less than 5 psig to over 250 psig. LNG must be maintained cold (at least below -117°F) to remain a liquid, independent of pressure.

The insulation, as efficient as it is, will not keep the temperature of LNG cold by itself. LNG is stored as a "boiling cryogen," that is, it is a very cold liquid at its boiling point for the pressure it is being stored. Stored LNG is analogous to boiling water, only 470° colder. The temperature of boiling water (212°F) does not change, even with increased heat, as it is cooled by evaporation (steam generation). In much the same way, LNG will stay at near constant temperature if kept at constant pressure. This phenomenon is called "autorefrigeration". As long as the steam (LNG vapor boil off) is allowed to leave the tea kettle (tank), the temperature will remain constant. If the vapor is not drawn off, then the pressure and temperature inside the vessel will rise. However, even at 100 psig, the LNG temperature will still be only about -200°F.

They are the cows of CowParade, the largest public art exposition in the world. Since 1998 CowParade has exposed their colourful cows in the streets and squares of over twenty cities around the world, such as Chicago, New York, London, Tokyo, Prague, only to name a few.

The cows are, in fact, the objects of art; they are life size models made of resin, on which the artists create their own works of art. The model cows serve the artists as a three-dimensional canvas.
